широкий класс портативных электронных устройств (electronic device), применяемых для мобильной связи (mobile communication) посредством сотовых сетей (cellular network). Эти устройства в дополнение к услугам телефонной связи предоставляют пользователю множество самых разнообразных сервисов, таких как SMS и MMS, работа с электронной почтой, доступ в Интернет и т. п. Кроме того, сотовый телефон может быть снабжён цифровой камерой, диктофоном, шагомером, фонариком, радиоприёмником, средствами навигации на местности и другими устройствами и аксессуарами. Первое поколение сотовых телефонов было аналоговым (analog cell phone), следующие стали цифровыми (digital)
